Hello guys! ๐๐ผ๐ How are you all? I hope you’re doing well and that you’ve had a lovely week! โค๏ธ I have to admit, the last couple of weeks have been very anxiety-filled for me, and the reason behind it is something that I’ve actually been keeping a little bit of a secret! ๐คซ๐ If you’ve been following along with my recent posts, you’ll know that my mum’s birthday was on Monday ๐๐ฅณ, and for the past month I’ve been busy trying to organise a little surprise for her without giving anything away. Now, keeping a surprise from my mum for an entire month was not easy! ๐๐ My mum and I have always had a very open relationship, and we’re the sort of people who can sit and talk to each other about pretty much anything. So having to keep something from her โ even though it was for a lovely reason โ definitely felt strange! There were quite a few moments where I nearly gave something away without even realising it. ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ๐
There were actually two parts to the surprise. ๐โจ The first part was that my aunt was going to come along with us to the Green Festival at Nottingham Arboretum, which took place on Sunday. ๐ณ๐ฟ It was something I’d been looking forward to because it meant my mum would get to spend some of her birthday weekend with her sister, without knowing that it had been planned especially as part of her surprise. But there was another part to the plan that I was even more excited aboutโฆ ๐โค๏ธ
The second part of the surprise was that my sister, Kim, and her family were going to meet us there too! ๐ฅนโค๏ธ So what started off as a day out at the festival was actually going to turn into a lovely family day with my mum, dad, aunt, sister, brother-in-law and the boys all being together. I’d had this whole thing planned for about a month, and although I was so excited about it, I think the pressure of keeping everything a secret definitely started to get to me. ๐
The closer we got to the day, the more I worried about whether everything would actually go to plan and, perhaps most importantly, whether my mum would actually like the surprise. In fact, the day before the surprise I was actually feeling quite poorly because I was so anxious about it all. ๐ฉโค๏ธ I know that might sound a little silly when it was supposed to be something exciting, but when you’ve put a lot of thought into something and you really want someone you love to enjoy it, it’s easy to start overthinking everything.
Would she like it? ๐ค
Would everyone be able to make it?
Would everything run smoothly?
Would I accidentally give the surprise away? ๐๐
My brain had clearly decided that I needed to think about every possible scenario! ๐ But thankfully, all of that worrying turned out to be completely unnecessary because she absolutely loved it! ๐ฅนโค๏ธ It was such a relief to finally be able to tell her everything and see how happy and grateful she was. โบ๏ธ๐ I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better reaction. I’m also so incredibly grateful to my aunt and my sister and her family for agreeing to go along with my plan and helping me make the surprise happen. โค๏ธ It wouldn’t have been the same without them, and seeing everyone together and having such a lovely time made all the stress of keeping it a secret completely worth it. Life can be busy, everyone has their own routines and plans, and sometimes getting the whole family in one place isn’t as easy as you’d like. So being able to spend the day together, laugh, chat, and enjoy each other’s company was something I really appreciated. โค๏ธ
And, of course, after all the excitement of Sunday, Monday โ my mum’s actual birthday โ was a much more chilled affair. ๐๐ There was no big adventure, no rushing around and definitely no elaborate plans. Instead, we spent the day doing something that was probably exactly what we all needed after being out all day the previous day: watching movies and snacking on whatever we could find! ๐ฌ๐ฟ๐ And after a busy few weeks โ and especially after all the anxiety I’d had surrounding the surprise โ I think we all deserved a little bit of downtime! Looking back now, I’m so glad I pushed through all of those worries and went ahead with the surprise. It reminded me that sometimes we can spend so much time worrying about whether something will go wrong that we forget to enjoy the excitement of what we’re actually planning. And when everything comes together, those moments can become memories that you end up treasuring. ๐ฅนโค๏ธ
It also got me thinking about memories in general, and how important photographs can be when it comes to holding onto them. ๐ธ A photograph can capture far more than just what something looked like. It can take you back to a particular day, a particular feeling, or a particular moment with the people you love. Sometimes years later, you can look at a photograph and instantly remember where you were, what you were doing, and how happy you felt. And with a new season beginning, there are going to be so many opportunities to create and capture those little memories all over again. ๐โจ The leaves will soon begin changing colour, the trees will turn golden, the evenings will get darker, and nature will start putting on one of its most beautiful displays of the year. ๐๐ณ
So, with memories, family, and photography all on my mind after the last couple of weeks, I thought it would be the perfect time to pick up my camera and take a closer look at the season arriving around us.
Which leads me nicely into this week’s postโฆ ๐๐ธ Autumn Through The Lens. ๐โจ
In today’s post, we’re going to look at some of the beautiful little things that make autumn such a wonderful season to photograph โ from colourful fallen leaves and misty mornings to wildlife, autumn light and those tiny everyday moments that can so easily be overlooked.
So, grab yourself a cuppa โ, get comfortable and let’s see what autumn looks like through the lens. ๐๐ธ

Autumn Through The Lens
I don’t know about you, but something about this time of year always makes me want to pick up my camera and start seeing the world a little differently. ๐๐ธ Summer may be coming to an end; the evenings are slowly getting darker, and there’s a definite chill beginning to creep into the air, but I actually think autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons to photograph. The colours, the textures, the changing light, and all those little details that can so easily go unnoticed make autumn feel almost magical through a camera lens. ๐โจ And that’s what inspired this week’s post: Autumn Through The Lens. Rather than simply talking about autumn, I thought I’d take a look at some of the things I love about this season from a photographer’s perspective. You don’t need a fancy camera or expensive equipment either. Whether you’re using a DSLR, a compact camera, or simply your phone, autumn gives us so many opportunities to capture something beautiful. ๐ท So grab yourself a cup of tea โ, get cosy, and let’s take a little walk through autumn togetherโฆ
๐ 1. Fallen Leaves

Let’s start with probably the most recognisable symbol of autumn โ fallen leaves. ๐ There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing the ground covered in a carpet of red, orange, yellow and golden-brown leaves. But instead of simply photographing a pile of leaves, I love the idea of looking at them a little differently. You could photograph a single brightly coloured leaf amongst lots of brown ones, capture leaves scattered along a woodland path, or even get closer and photograph the details of the veins and textures. Changing your perspective can make such a difference too. A photograph taken from ground level can make a simple path covered in leaves feel much more dramatic. And, of course, sometimes there’s nothing wrong with photographing a huge pile of leaves either! ๐๐
๐ณ 2. Autumn Trees

One of my favourite things about autumn is watching the trees slowly change. It never seems to happen all at once. One tree might still be completely green while another has already turned a beautiful shade of orange or gold. Then, before you know it, the whole landscape seems to have transformed. I think that’s something particularly special to capture because you’re not just photographing a tree โ you’re photographing a moment in the transition between two seasons. ๐โก๏ธ๐ You could photograph an entire tree against the sky, look upwards through the branches, or focus on a few colourful leaves amongst the remaining green ones. Sometimes the simplest photograph can capture the feeling of autumn perfectly.
๐ง 3. Raindrops & Wet Leaves

Autumn isn’t always sunshine and blue skies, and that’s okay. ๐ง๏ธ In fact, rainy weather can create some of the most interesting photography opportunities. After a shower, take a closer look at the leaves around you. Water droplets can catch the light beautifully, while wet leaves often look more vibrant in colour. A gloomy, overcast day can also create a completely different mood from bright sunshine. Instead of fighting against the weather, you can use it to your advantage. There is something quite atmospheric about a photograph of rain-covered leaves, especially when you can see tiny droplets sitting on the surface. ๐ง๐ Sometimes bad weather really can make for good photographs!
๐ซ๏ธ 4. Misty Mornings

There’s something almost magical about an autumn morning when everything is covered in a soft layer of mist. ๐ซ๏ธ๐ Mist can completely transform a familiar landscape. A field you’ve walked past countless times can suddenly look mysterious, while trees disappearing into the distance can create a beautiful sense of depth. If you’re lucky enough to have a misty morning, keep your camera nearby and look for those little moments where the mist catches the light. You don’t necessarily need a dramatic landscape either. A row of trees, a quiet path or even a lone tree standing in a field can become a beautiful subject. There’s something about misty photographs that makes me want to step straight into them. ๐ค
๐ 5. Autumn Fruits, Berries & Conkers

Sometimes the best photographs are hiding in the smallest details. Autumn is full of little things that can make fantastic photography subjects โ apples, berries, conkers, acorns, rose hips, seed pods and all sorts of other natural treasures. ๐ฐ๐๐ These are perfect subjects for anyone who enjoys close-up photography because you can really focus on the colours, shapes and textures. I love the idea of finding one little autumn detail and filling the whole frame with it. Something as simple as a shiny conker sitting amongst fallen leaves can suddenly look like a carefully arranged photograph. And the best part? You don’t have to go searching for an impressive landscape. Sometimes autumn is quite literally sitting at your feet.
๐ฟ๏ธ 6. Autumn Wildlife

Autumn is also a lovely time to keep an eye out for wildlife. ๐ฟ๏ธ๐ Squirrels gathering food, birds sitting amongst colourful branches, and little creatures moving through fallen leaves can all make wonderful photographic subjects. Wildlife photography can obviously require a lot of patience, and you aren’t always going to get the perfect photograph โ but that’s part of the fun. Sometimes the photograph you end up with isn’t the one you expected. Perhaps you capture a squirrel disappearing behind a tree, a bird silhouetted against the sky or an animal partly hidden amongst the leaves. It doesn’t always have to be a perfectly posed photograph. Sometimes those little imperfect moments tell the best story. ๐ธโค๏ธ
โ๏ธ 7. Autumn Light

Photography is about more than just what you’re photographing. It’s also about light. โจ And autumn can give us some absolutely beautiful light. As the days get shorter, the sun sits lower in the sky, creating longer shadows and that gorgeous warm, golden glow that photographers love. Look for sunlight shining through colourful leaves, golden light hitting the side of a tree, or little patches of sunlight appearing between the branches. Even an ordinary scene can look completely different when the light is just right. You might find that your favourite autumn photograph isn’t necessarily of the most spectacular view โ it’s simply a photograph where the light happened to fall perfectly. ๐โ๏ธ
๐ชต 8. Autumn Textures

One thing I think we sometimes forget about photography is how much we can capture through texture. Autumn is absolutely full of it.
Rough tree bark. ๐
Crunchy leaves.
Soft moss.
Acorns and conkers.
Fallen branches.
Feathers.
Mushrooms.
Wet stones.
All of these little details can create interesting photographs when you get close enough. Instead of photographing the whole scene, try filling the frame with one particular texture. It can make a photograph feel much more tactile โ almost as though you could reach through the screen and touch it. And it’s another reminder that you don’t have to travel somewhere spectacular to find something worth photographing. Nature is full of little photographic opportunities if you take the time to look. ๐ค
๐ช 9. Reflections

Rain might not always be welcome, but it does give us something pretty special to work with โ puddles! ๐๐ง After it has rained, look down and see what you can find reflected in the water. Autumn trees reflected in a puddle can create some really interesting photographs, particularly when the leaves are bright and colourful. You can also experiment with your composition. Rather than simply photographing the puddle from above, try getting closer and filling most of your photograph with the reflection. Suddenly, a little puddle on a path can become a completely different world. ๐โจ It’s amazing what we can find when we remember to look down as well as up.
๐งก 10. The Little Moments
And finally, perhaps my favourite one of all โ the little moments. Because autumn photography doesn’t always have to mean beautiful landscapes, woodland walks or dramatic sunsets. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the most meaningful photographs.
A warm cup of tea beside the window. โ
Rain running down the glass. ๐ง๏ธ
Your favourite cosy jumper.
A candle glowing on a dark evening. ๐ฏ๏ธ
A single leaf sitting on a windowsill.
A pumpkin appearing for the first time. ๐
The view outside your window changing colour.
Someone you love enjoying a cosy autumn day.
These moments might seem insignificant at the time, but photographs have a wonderful way of turning ordinary moments into memories. And I think that’s one of the things I love most about photography. It encourages us to slow down and actually notice things. We can get so used to seeing the same places and views that we stop really looking at them. But pick up a camera, and suddenly you start noticing the tiny details again. ๐ธโค๏ธ
Final Thoughts
I think that’s what autumn through the lens really means to me. It’s not about having the most expensive camera, taking the most technically perfect photograph or finding the most beautiful place to visit. It’s about looking.
Looking at the colours.
Looking at the light.
Looking at the tiny details.
Looking at something familiar from a completely different angle.
Autumn is constantly changing, which means there’s always something new to photograph. One day the trees might still be mostly green, and a week later they’ll be covered in gold. ๐โก๏ธ๐ A few days after that, the leaves might be covering the ground. And then, before we know it, winter will be here. So this autumn, whether you’re heading out with a camera, taking photographs on your phone, or simply enjoying the view from your window, take a moment to really look around you.
Notice the little things.
Notice the changing colours.
Notice the light.
And most importantly, capture the moments that mean something to you. โค๏ธ๐ธ
Autumn really is such a beautiful season, and I think photography gives us a lovely excuse to slow down and appreciate it before it disappears. So I’d love to knowโฆWhat’s your favourite thing to photograph during autumn? ๐๐ธ Are you someone who loves photographing colourful leaves and beautiful landscapes, or do you prefer capturing the smaller details that other people might miss? If you have a favourite autumn photograph, I’d love to hear about it! โค๏ธ
And before I go, I just want to say a huge thank you for stopping by Peyton’s View and spending a little bit of your time with me today. ๐ฅนโค๏ธ Whether you’ve been reading my blog for years, you’ve only just discovered it, or you simply happened to stumble across this post while looking for a little bit of autumn inspiration, I’m so grateful that you’re here.
Every view, every comment, every kind message, and every person who takes the time to read my words genuinely means more to me than you probably realise. ๐ฅนโค๏ธ Writing has become such a special little part of my life, and being able to share my thoughts, experiences, photographs, and the things that make me smile with all of you makes it even more meaningful.
So thank you for being here, for coming along on another little journey with me, and for seeing the world through Peyton’s View. ๐ธ๐ Until next time, take care, stay safe, and remember to stop every now and then, look around you, and appreciate the little moments โ because sometimes they’re the ones worth remembering most. โค๏ธ
