Travelling Without an Itinerary!

๐Ÿ‘‹ Hello guys! How are you all doing? I hope you’ve had a lovely week and have been making the most of the summer weather whenever you’ve had the chance! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’› Whether you’ve been away on holiday, enjoyed a little day out, or simply spent some time relaxing at home, I hope you’ve been able to find a few moments to smile. As always, before we jump into today’s travel post, I thought I’d have a little catch-up with you all and share what’s been happening over the past couple of weeks.
It’s been quite an emotional couple of weeks for me, especially over the last week. Last Monday (27th July) would’ve marked what should have been Thumper’s 13th birthday. ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŽ‚ Sadly, he never got the chance to reach that milestone, and even though it’s now been eight years since he passed away, I still think about him every single day. I know some people might find it a little unusual when I say he was my baby or my child, but that’s genuinely how I felt. He wasn’t “just a rabbit” to meโ€”he was my best friend, my little companion, and he came into my life when I needed him the most. During one of the hardest periods of my life, he gave me a reason to smile, a reason to keep going, and unconditional love that I’ll never forget. I’ll always be grateful for everything he gave me, and although the pain has softened over the years, the love never fades. He’ll always have a special place in my heart. ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’›
Just a few days later, another difficult anniversary came around. Saturday (1st August) marked 13 years since we lost my Grandad, someone I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts over the years because of how incredibly close we were. Losing someone you love is something you never truly get overโ€”you simply learn how to carry that love and those memories with you. There isn’t a year that goes by where this date doesn’t make us stop and reflect on all the wonderful memories we shared with him. Although it’s always a sad day, I also try to remember how lucky I was to have such an amazing Grandad who filled my childhood with so much love, laughter and happiness. ๐Ÿ’™
Because we knew these anniversaries would be difficult,ย my family and I decided the best thing we could do was toย get out of the house and spend some quality time together. On Monday we headed to Meadowhall in Sheffield for a gentle day of shopping and browsing. Then on Friday we made our way to Skegness instead of waiting until Saturday, as the weather forecast looked much warmer and we knew it would be much quieter too. Rather than rushing around trying to fit everything in, we made a conscious decision to take life a little slower. We wandered wherever we felt like going, stopped whenever something caught our eye, and simply enjoyed being in the moment together. And, of course, no visit to the seaside would be complete without treating ourselves to some freshly made doughnuts! ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿคค They were absolutely delicious and definitely one of the highlights of the day!
Saturday itself turned into something really special too. We decided to have an ‘Ice Age’ marathon as our own little way of honouring my Grandad. ๐Ÿ’™ Anyone who knew him would know how much he loved animated characters, especially ‘Homer Simpson’ from ‘The Simpsons’ and, without a doubt, ‘Scrat’ from the ‘Ice Age’ films. ๐Ÿคญ Watching that nut-obsessed squirrel desperately trying to protect his acorn would always have him laughing, no matter how many times he’d seen it before. Sitting together watching the films brought back so many lovely memories and, in a strange but comforting way, it made me feel that little bit closer to him again. Sometimes it’s the smallest traditions that help keep someone’s memory alive.
While we were enjoying our own days out, my sister and her family had an adventure of their own after using the Christmas present we bought themโ€”a family trip to West Midlands Safari Park! ๐Ÿฆ’๐Ÿฆ“ They’d been so excited after we’d recommended it, and it was lovely seeing all the photos they sent us afterwards. From what my sister told us, they had an absolutely fantastic day, and she said she’d happily recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting. Hearing how much they enjoyed themselves and seeing all their smiles made us so happy, and it reminded me that making memories with the people we love really is one of the greatest gifts.
Looking back over the past couple of weeks, it’s made me realise something quite important. Even during some of the hardest days, taking a step back, slowing down and simply enjoying where you are can make such a difference. None of our days out were packed with strict schedules or endless checklistsโ€”we just let the day unfold naturally, appreciated the little moments and spent quality time together. And that’s exactly what inspired this week’s blog post…

…which leads me nicely into today’s post all about travelling without an itinerary this summer, embracing spontaneity and discovering why sometimes the best adventures are the ones you never planned at all. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒโœˆ๏ธ

Summer is here, and for many of us, it’s the perfect time to head off on an adventure, whether that’s exploring somewhere close to home, enjoying a UK staycation, or jetting off somewhere new. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ
When we think about travelling, it’s easy to feel like every single moment has to be planned. We spend hours researching attractions, making lists of places to visit, booking activities and trying to fit everything into just a few days. Before we know it, what was meant to be a relaxing break can start to feel like another job!
But have you ever thought about doing the exact opposite? ๐Ÿค”
Travelling without a strict itinerary doesn’t mean turning up with absolutely no plans. Instead, it means allowing yourself the freedom to slow down, explore at your own pace and let your day unfold naturally. Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when you aren’t looking for them at all.
Whether it’s discovering a hidden cafรฉ, stumbling across a beautiful viewpoint or finding a peaceful little street filled with colourful flowers, some of the best travel memories simply can’t be planned.
Which leads me nicely into this week’s blog post, where I’ll be sharing 20 reasons why travelling without an itinerary this summer might just become your favourite way to explore! โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“ธ

๐ŸŒธ What Does Travelling Without an Itinerary Mean?

Travelling without an itinerary doesn’t mean being completely unprepared. It’s still a good idea to book accommodation, make sure you know how to get there, and have a few places in mind that you’d like to visit.

The difference is that you don’t schedule every single hour of every day. Instead, you give yourself permission to be flexible. If you find somewhere you absolutely love, you can stay longer. If the weather changes or you discover somewhere unexpected, you can simply go with the flow.

It takes away the pressure of feeling like you have to tick everything off a checklist and replaces it with curiosity, relaxation and a sense of adventure.

๐ŸŒž Why It’s Worth Trying

There are so many wonderful benefits to travelling this way.

โœจ It helps you slow down.

๐Ÿ“ธ You often discover incredible photography opportunities.

๐ŸŒฟ It reduces stress and pressure.

๐Ÿ’› You create memories that no travel guide could have planned.

  1. Our kids just lost their 13 year old bunny and I can get a sense of your sadness and loss. She was a big part of their life.

As to travelling without an itinerary, we can all benefit from slowing down, but I need a basic framework to feel at ease. We just travelled with our other kids for 3 days and not knowing what was next or what our timetable was did cause a bit of stress. I do agree that slowing down and spending more time exploring one place is the way to go.

Have a great day Peyton. Allan
